Toynbee Hall
London, E1School Year:2006-2007
Date:12 December 2006
Pupils from two schools in the Whitechapel area of London participated in a Sonic Postcards project. The project was run in partnership with Toynbee Hall and the pupils had a great time meeting each other and getting to know the different workshop leaders. The project was facilitated by Jocasta Lucas with help from a number of other participants. The young people identified a huge variety of places to record sounds...and, even though we had to battle through thunder and lightning, we visited a local city farm, Brick Lane, Whitechapel Market, an Art Gallery, the East London Mosque and a variety of shops. The finished postcards really sum up the unique soundscape of this diverse and sonically-interesting area! The pupils worked really hard throughout the project and were enthusiastic and attentive! Have a listen to their compositions: some are very natural...others have lots of effects added to them: the results can be quite bizarre!!!
