Through the British Council, four fantastic projects have been delivered in two schools in Chongqing, China in March 2007.  Workshop leader Pippa Murphy worked with students from Shanhu Primary School and Number 11 Middle School to produce some fascinating work. The projects were introduced to the students through work from two primary schools in Aberdeenshire that had been linked especially for this project.  Whitehills School and Rothienorman Primary School prepared some beautiful written postcards as well as recorded messages to send to China.  The British pupils had many questions about what school life was like in China and what Chinese students got up to in their free time.Through four field trips to a huge variety of places in and around Chongqing - a busy shopping street, the banks of the Yangtze River, restaurants, theme parks, a temple, as well as interviewing many people along the way, a wealth of sonic material was collected.  Via the translator, PingPing, some beautiful postcards were created containing both Chinese and English speech, woven amongst the diversity of recorded sounds. The projects culminated in a joint presentation to a huge audience in a hall absolutely covered in stunning art work and written postcards to be sent back to Britain.  The students not only emailed the British Schools but have sent each school and enormous parcel containing items collected from each field trip.  Pippa Murphy will spend another day in the two Scottish schools dissecting what has been sent to them and creating more work to send back to China - hopefully the start of a long-lasting relationship!
